For a real picnic adventure visit the picnic grounds at Splinters Cabin Day Use Area deep in the woods adjacent to Deep Creek. It is located on a single lane Forest Service Road (portion of the road is dirt and rugged). From Lake Arrowhead, travel north on Hwy-173 and turn right (east) on Hook Creek Road. At the end of Hook Creek Road, follow Forest Road 2N26Y to Forest Service Road 3N34C, and turn right, follow this road to the picnic area. Here you will find what is left of the historic Splinters Cabin which was built in 1922 by Le Roy Raymond. He dedicated the cabin “Splinters”, since his wife always stated everything that he built seemed to be full of splinters. The world-renowned Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a short walk from the parking lot, and the PCT traveling north from Splinter’s follows Deep Creek for 14 miles, a popular native trout fishery. You will reach Aztec Falls, a popular swimming hole and a waterfall with plenty of cliffs and rocks for jumping.
